More than 35,000 visitors descend on World of Food Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi food festival has this week seen the conclusion of World of Food Abu Dhabi with more than 30,000 visitors having visited the event at um Al Emarat Park in the capital. Both residents and visitors alike came to enjoy not only tasteful cuisines from some of the best chefs around the globe, but also some of the best food-related experiences, confirming Abu Dhabi’s position as an international hub of culinary inspiration.

15 World Kitchens participated in the event with countries including Germany, Mauritius, Malaysia, India and this year’s Abu Dhabi Food Festival Guest of Honour, Mexico. Award winning MasterChefs were on hand to rustle up signature taster dishes, cooked to perfection, for visitors to sample. Each day saw five to seven chefs give live public demonstrations of their cooking on the main stage with visitors able to leave with their own inspiration for recipes to try at home. Some of the most notable chefs in attendance were: World President Chef Thomas Gugler, celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor, Emirati chef Sultan Al Otaiba as well as a presentation from the UAE Culinary National Team.


World of Food Abu Dhabi was also lucky enough to welcome three renowned Michelin Star Chefs. Julia Komp, a German chef who in 2016, at age 27, became the youngest German female chef to be awarded a Michelin star. She’s head chef of the restaurant in Loersfeld Castle. Claude Taffarello who has 45 years of gastronomical experience, and is Ambassador of Cassoulet (a typical dish from France) and Head Chef & Owner of l’Auberge du Poids Public in France, who received his first Michelin star over twenty years ago in 1995. And thirdly Vineet Bhatia, who is widely regarded as the “face “of modern progressive Indian cuisine. He created history in 2001 by being the first Indian Chef -Patron to receive a coveted Michelin star for his restaurant and yet again in 2009, as being the only Indian chef to have secured two, one for each of his restaurants in London and Geneva. In a consultative capacity, Vineet has restaurants in hotels around the world, most notably in Mauritius, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and back home in Mumbai.

Aside from the culinary treats on offer there were plenty of other activities for visitors to entertain themselves with. Including, carving and cake decorating classes with top pastry chefs, demonstrations by current World Cake Decorating Champion, Jade Saducas. Kids activities with chefs such as cookie decorating, fruit kebab making and ginger bread house making. Other fun-filled family events included live music and DJ’s, sushi making classes, ice carving, wedding cake decorations, delicious dessert stands, BBQ bonanzas, daily Emirati dishes, new concept food trucks and a coffee brew bar, meaning there truly was something for everyone!

Arguably most impressive of all was the Guinness World Record set by event for the largest chicken margougah. Weighing in at a colossal 4,775kg and taking five hours to cook, the World of Food attempt smashed the previous record. Hundreds of visitors were on hand to witness history being made with portions given to the public to sample. The remaining majority of the margougah was shared with the Red Crescent charity.

Manarat Al Saadiyat is also hosting an Open Talk featuring Dr. Habib Al Mulla, along with a book signing titled “My Journey to the World Restaurants”, with film and documentary screenings taking place throughout the Food Festival. Art studio workshops will also be on offer with activities where Art Studio will adapt its drop-in workshops for adults, juniors and children.

Another standout promotion still underway is the citywide ADFF Scavenger Hunt Competition by Traceberry App which is an exclusive augmented reality scavenger game, users of the App can enter for a chance to win prizes worth 1,000,000 AED such as mall vouchers, electronics and fine dining opportunities. The App users simply need to download the Traceberry App to chase and catch “quiz berries” around different event locations of ADFF and participating restaurants in the city.

Finally, in partnership with Time Out Abu Dhabi, the popular Abu Dhabi Restaurant Week has been extended into the final week of ADFF, continuing the celebration of all things culinary. The festival gives diners a range of offers, so they can explore global flavours cooked up by world-class chefs via specially crafted three, four and five course menus.
