Al Ain’s Zayed Central Library hosts ‘How to Create Silent Books’ Workshop
The third edition of the Silent Book Exhibition, held under the theme ‘Stories Beyond Words!’, organised a workshop entitled ‘How to Create Silent Books’ last week at Zayed Central Library in Al Ain.
Organised as part of a collaboration between the UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY) and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the workshop was presented in English by Finnish illustrator Emmi Jormalainen, who holds an MA in Graphic Design and specialises in visual storytelling, children’s books, and drawing.
The workshop was aimed at boosting the UAE’s production of silent picture books, which tell stories that go beyond language barriers, through teaching participants about the fundamentals of graphic design and drawing that support such works.
Jormalainen detailed all the steps of visual storytelling, from producing an idea and sequencing the events, to designing and transforming the book into a product.
Jormalainen said that the workshop’s comprehensive four-day programme produced remarkable results, as the 10 participants exchanged views, “even with their different artistic backgrounds, they found common ground around the goal of creating inspired picture books”.
The workshop also explored the role of illustrations and designs in narrating events and moving readers, while also stimulating a child’s mind, especially when interpreting plot and analysing characters.
Hosted by DCT Abu Dhabi at Zayed Central Library, the Silent Book Exhibition will run until 18th October 2018 and provide access to 79 wordless picture books, selected by the International Board on Books for Young People, from 20 different countries. The exhibition also offers visitors of all ages and interests insights into the process of creating silent books and illustrating meaning using visual language.
The Silent Book Exhibition is open to the public from 8am to 8pm. For more information, please visit https://library.dctabudhabi.ae/
