EdaraLab’s ‘Educating for the Future’ Conference Examines Opportunities and Challenges in Education Sector
The EdaraLab Education Management conference entitled ‘Educating for the Future’, organised by Harvard Business Review, took place on Monday, November 12 at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The conference brought together local, regional and international education experts from the public and private sector to discuss future opportunities and challenges in education.
During the conference, attendees discussed the opportunities and challenges of building a new business model for education that take advantage of the flexibility and innovation offered by public-private partnerships. The conference aimed to outline a strategy for placing the UAE at the forefront of educational excellence.
International, regional, and local education experts attended the conference and gave inspirational speeches and conducted panel discussions on the future of education. The conference was opened by Mohammed Khalifa AlNuaimi, Director of the Education Affairs Office at the Crown Prince’s Court of Abu Dhabi.Al Nuaimi discussed the Moral Education program that was launched under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Al Nuaimi listed the key pillars of the Moral Education program, which are developing an individual as a moral being, applying moral thinking to the development of individuals as members of the society, developing moral thinking in the context of civic duty and responsibility, and applying moral thinking in shaping the future.
The conference also discussed the role of the education sector in using modern technology and preparing the next generation to deal with the latest technological developments, in alignment with the government’s efforts towards building a knowledge-based economy. Dr. Mansoor AlAwar, Chancellor & Founder of Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University, said: “There is no smart government without smart schools and smart education.”
AlAwar shared an inspirational quote by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, who said: “I am convinced that teaching our children in the same way we did yesterday is in itself perpetuating illiteracy that no longer has a place in any society that wishes to join the global race.”
Sir Christopher Stone, Global Chief Education Officer at GEMS, highlighted the role of universities in coping with the changing technology in education. He said that universities should embrace the change in technology and adapt. In addition to that, EdaraLab’s panel discussions shed light on ideas about teaching students to be critical thinkers, understand the impact of technology, adapt to new technologies, and be prepared for a knowledge-based economy.
Moreover, Bandar AlShehri, Qualitative Programs Department Director at Tatweer, KSA, discussed Business Intelligence in Higher Education, reflecting on Najran University’s adoption of a smart Decision Support System.
EdaraLab’s ‘Educating for the Future’ conference reviewed the challenges facing the educational system in the GCC region, and suggested potential ideas in order to stay on top of things and adapt to the technological evolution in the education sector.
