Faculty of Medicine at AUB grants US fellowships for its students
The American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) announced that graduates from the American University of Beirut – Faculty of Medicine part of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International (ACGME-I) programs with Advanced Specialty accreditation will be eligible to apply for all United States ACGME fellowships starting July 2019.
“Gaining eligibility for our ACGME-I graduate residents to enroll in US ACGME fellowship programs denotes a significant step in building the strong foundations in medical education and healthcare through AUBMC 2020 Vision,” said Dr Mohamed H. Sayegh, Raja N. Khuri Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Vice President of Medical Affairs at the American University of Beirut (AUB). “As a result of lengthy negotiations and discussions, we are pleased that the “Common Program Requirements” addressed our desires in favor of our students and residents. This decision will help assure a pipeline of the best students and residents as future recruits for AUBMC, which also falls in line with our reverse brain drain strategy,” added Dr Sayegh.
Thanks for this development, graduates of AUB GME residency training programs accredited by ACGME-I will be able to apply for ACGME accredited fellowship training programs in the United States, except for the Neurosurgery residents.
It’s worth to note that the ACGME employs best practices, research, and advancements across the continuum of medical education to demonstrate its dedication to enhancing healthcare and graduate medical education. ACGME, a non-profit organization, sets standards for the United States graduate medical education programs and institutions sponsoring them, in addition to rendering accreditation decisions based on compliance with its standards. The ACGME is committed to improving the patient care delivered by resident and fellow physicians today, and in their future independent practice, in clinical learning environments characterized by excellence in care, safety, and professionalism.
ACGME accreditation provides assurance that AUB meets the institutional and program quality standards of the specialty or subspecialty practices for which it prepares its graduates. ACGME accreditation is overseen by a Review Committee made up of volunteer specialty experts that set accreditation standards and provide peer evaluation of Sponsoring Institutions and Specialty and Subspecialty Residency and Fellowship Programs.
