Flamenco and Classical Guitar Maestro Carlos Piñana to Perform Spectacular Concert with Bait Al Oud Musicians
Organised by Department of Culture – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) under its annual Music Programme, Bait Al Oud will present a spectacular one-off concert by the brilliant flamenco guitarist and composer Carlos Piñana at Manarat Al Saadiyat on 21 February.
Entitled Flamenco Arts, the concert will see Piñana share his innovative vision of the flamenco as well as his expertise of different musical styles. He will be joined onstage by students and teachers from Bait Al Oud, the musical institution dedicated to the preservation and teaching of Arabic musical heritage and its instruments, after conducting a one-week masterclass with the group from 16 to 20 February at the prestigious music institution.
Piñana was born in 1976 into a musical family with a long flamenco tradition, with his father and grandfather both being famous flamenco players. After first learning flamenco technique from his father, he went on to study classical guitar at the Music Conservatory of Cartagena. Currently he combines his performance work with his roles as Professor of Flamenco Guitar at the Music Conservatory of Murcia and as Artistic Director of the Murcia International Guitar Festival.
Throughout his career he has won numerous awards for his musicianship, including the First Prize and Bordón Minero at the International Festival of the Cantes Mineros (1996); the National Prize of Concert Guitar Ramon Montoya at the Cordoba Flamenco Art Festival (1998); and First Prize Sabicas at the Calasparra’s National Festival of Young Flamencos. He has performed all over the world, including in New York, Paris, London, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Tunis, Cairo, Mexico and Moscow.
Piñana has played with numerous orchestras such as the Murcia Symphonic Orchestra, Beethoven Academy Orchestra, and Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra. He has released numerous CDs as a soloist, and composed, directed and interpreted the music for shows such as “Póker Flamenco” and “Atiempo de Fuego”.
Piñana combines classical music with the temperament and lyricism of flamenco and sees himself as a guitarist with the ability to combine technique, composition and dynamism with restraint.
Bait Al Oud was established by DCT Abu Dhabi to provide an inspiring platform for aspiring musicians, and a renowned centre for Arabic music. Bait Al Oud works to preserve the UAE and region’s musical heritage with a focus on teaching Arabic music and its instruments, such as the oud and qanoon.
