Oculoplastic Surgeon at Burjeel Day Surgery Center successfully dislodges 7-year-old dormant tumor sitting in patient’s eye socket
A generic visit for vision screening for his son, and doctor’s keen observation, proved to be life saving for the 42-year-old male living in Abu Dhabi.
The vigilant ophthalmologist at Burjeel Day Surgery Center, Al Reem Island observed that the right eye of the Portuguese expat was protruding more than the left eye. The guest (originally accompanying his son) disregarded the recommendation for examination and stressed that it was a gradual progressive painless protruding that started to appear 7 years ago. After ignoring the doctor’s prognosis several times, the guest finally underwent Brain/Orbit MRI and CT Scan and the medical team spotted a well-defined ovoid intraconal lesion in the Right orbit suggesting possibility of cavernous angioma (vascular tumor).
“It is an interesting case of swift and impressive symptom management. The 26 x 22 mm tumor was located atypical (superior nasal), so we decided to use vertical lid splitting approach and on Monday, 13th May, we performed right anterior orbitomy followed by excisional biopsy of the lesion. We’re glad that patient is doing well post-surgery and will recover completely within 3 to 6 months”, informed Dr Haitham Moued, Oculoplastic Surgeon at Burjeel Day Surgery Center.
“When you visit to seek medical help for a condition that can be fatal and you are cured, it is a matter of luck. In my case it is a rare fortuity that the ardent doctor at Burjeel Day Surgery Center insisted me to undergo evaluation by just looking at the external symptoms of my right eye. I had gone just as an attendant along with my 6-year-old son for his regular eye check up. It was after the persistent advice over couple of visits that I underwent investigation and this tumor got diagnosed. I can’t thank enough Dr Haitham Moued for saving me from this surprise tumor. I’ll also take the opportunity to thank his surgical team and everyone at the Burjeel Reem ophthalmology department for giving me and my family a comfortable, caring experience”, said Mr Rui Jorge Cardoso Rodrigues Meglas Nunes.
The ophthalmologists at Burjeel Day Surgery Center recommended that it is important to treat our eyes with care throughout our lives. Ignoring changes in vision or skipping eye examinations put our most precious gift at risk. One should see an ophthalmologist as soon as he or she experience any symptoms like physical changes to the eye, changes in vision, changes in field of vision, loss of vision or changes in color vision. People with diabetes, thyroid disease, hypertension, rheumatological diseases such as lupus; anyone with a family history of glaucoma, retinal detachment or anyone with a tendency toward high intraocular pressure are at a higher risk of eye problems and need to see an eye doctor more frequently.
“At Burjeel Day Surgery Center, we diligently adhere to the ethos of focus on holistic well-being. I congratulate the ophthalmology department team for going out of the way in emphasizing the importance for the evaluation and pro-actively saving the patient from catastrophic tumor in the eye”, reckons Dr Madhav Rao, Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at Burjeel Day Surgery Center.
