President of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics visits Abu Dhabi
The Emirates Speech Language Pathology Society (ESLPS), in collaboration with the Convention Bureau (ADCB) at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), and Centro Congressi Internazionale (CCI), organised a site inspection to Abu Dhabi for Prof. Lilly Cheng, the President of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP), on the 25th and 26th October 2018.
The visit included a city tour which included Emirates Palace, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi.
A roundtable meeting was organised at Danat Al Emarat hospital, one of Abu Dhabi’s key hospitals that includes a dedicated speech language pathology department, where Prof. Cheng gave a speech entitled “How IALP will unify the Speech and Language Pathology practice worldwide”. The roundtable was attended by key decision-makers in the field of speech and language pathology and in the health sector, and from different public organisations in UAE, including UAE University and the Down Syndrome Association.
Prof. Cheng highlighted the importance of working through specific committees related to the speech and language therapy field, contributing to scientific journals, organising and sponsoring congresses, and cooperating with international societies. She emphasised the role that the Emirates Speech Language Pathology Society would play in the region in developing speech and language pathology education, improving profession services and organising conventions.
Mubarak Al Shamsi, Director of Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau at DCT Abu Dhabi said: “We are honoured to host Prof. Cheng, President of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics in Abu Dhabi. As the Convention Bureau, we work very closely with our local societies and international associations in attracting business events, that raise awareness, reinforce and grow sub-specialties within the healthcare sector in Abu Dhabi and the UAE.”
Ms. Sara Bachar, President of the Emirates Speech Language Pathology Society, emphasised the importance of Prof. Cheng’s visit which helped boost speech and language expertise in the region to higher levels. She mentioned that becoming an affiliated society to the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) and hosting Prof. Cheng, are considered as great achievements for a society only one year old, under the umbrella of the Emirates Medical Association. She added: “The Emirates Speech Language Pathology Society is looking forward to joining forces with local and international organisations to improve the Speech and Language Pathology services and increase awareness about it.”
Mariano Gonzalez, CEO of Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women & Children, stated: “It is a pleasure to be supporting the speech and language pathology society and hosting Prof. Lilly Cheng today. Considering the specialties we have for women and children, we have seen that a dedicated unit for Speech and Language Pathology was needed to provide integrated care for our patients. Our six-month old unit is now managed by our specialised therapists and provides the ultimate in care for premature babies at our NICU, and older children having problems with feeding, swallowing or delayed speech as well, working closely with our paediatricians, neonatologists, lactation consultants, and paediatric surgeons.”
