7th Annual GCC Heritage and Oral History Conference to be titled ‘Zayed and Tolerance’
Under the patronage of H.E Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Cabinet Member, Minister of Tolerance, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is organising the 7th GCC Heritage and Oral History Conference, taking place on 8 and 9 October 2019 at Manarat Al Saadiyat. This year’s conference will be held under the theme ‘Zayed and Tolerance: A Community’s Culture & Leadership Approach’ to mark 2019’s designation as the Year of Tolerance.
The event will see the participation of prominent figures, most notably HE Turki bin Abdullah Al Dakhil, Saudi Ambassador to the UAE; HE Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Jarwan, President of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace; Reverend Bishoy Fakhri, Pastor of St Anthony Coptic Orthodox Cathedral Church in Abu Dhabi; and a line-up of academics, researchers and experts from GCC-based universities, educational institutions and competent authorities.
HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “This annual event plays an important part in highlighting the UAE’s work to safeguard collective heritage and oral history. In the UAE’s Year of Tolerance, this edition of the conference will focus on this value that was so important to our founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and explore how tolerance is embedded in the region’s history as a bridge for cross-cultural communication.
“Tolerance manifests across many aspects of Emirati heritage and history and remains an integral part of our culture to this day. Our country’s continued message of tolerance and acceptance is the foundation of the mutual respect and open cultural dialogue seen between the 200 nationalities living harmoniously in the UAE.”
Conference sessions will cover such topics as how best to promote and spread tolerance, the role of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque as a cultural beacon, examining the UAE as a model of tolerance, tolerance in the philosophies and foreign policy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and much more.
The conference is the latest in a series inaugurated in 2010 and held annually by DCT Abu Dhabi to create a common vision for the GCC countries, drawing on the leadership’s role in safeguarding heritage and developing identity.
