A live-stream visit with artist Diana Al-Hadid in her Brooklyn studio, revisiting her exhibition at The NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery
The NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Art Gallery will launch its eighth digital archive, the Diana Al-Hadid: Phantom Limb exhibition, as part of its TRACE: Archives and Reunions series, on Tuesday, September 22.
In a live-streamed virtual studio visit, The NYUAD Art Gallery Executive Director and the University’s Chief Curator Maya Allison will virtually join Diana Al-Hadid in her studio in Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday, September 22 at 6:30pm GST. To register for the conversation, please click here.
During this event, Al-Hadid will reflect on her solo exhibition at The NYUAD Art Gallery and discuss the impact of COVID-19 on her creative process and career. The conversation and tour will take place on Zoom and will also be live-streamed on The NYUAD Art Gallery’s Facebook page.
First shown in March 2016, the exhibition’s title is derived from a central art piece, Phantom Limb, a term referring to the sensation that a missing arm or leg is still present. The theme of memory and its physical manifestation in art and architecture reappears throughout Al-Hadid’s work. In the Diana Al-Hadid: Phantom Limb exhibition at NYUAD, painting and vast contemporary sculpture were combined through a visceral, materially-focused technique that filled the 7,000 square foot gallery.
The iconic Phantom Limb sculpture at the center of the exhibition premiered at The Secession in Vienna, traveling to The NYUAD Art Gallery in 2016, and then in an exhibition at Brown University’s David Winton Bell Gallery in 2017. All three institutions supported the book publication produced on the occasion of the exhibition at NYUAD.
The virtual release of the exhibition archive for Diana-Al Hadid: Phantom Limb will include the first digital publication of a major monographic publication on the artist, as well as the Youth Guide, brochure and installation views.
