ACS Beirut Hosts LEBMUN ‘21 conference “Opportunity Amidst Uncertainty”

The American Community School Beirut held the opening ceremony of the 17th annual Model United Nations Conference LEBMUN on Friday, March 26th 2021.
The three-day conference was held virtually for the first time and was attended by 180+ student diplomats from more than 17 schools around the world including Nepal, Kuwait, Spain, Portugal, India, Oman, and Jordan and Lebanon.
The opening ceremony featured a keynote address by Dr. Fadi El-Jardali, Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Evidence-Informed Policy and Practice. Dr. El-Jardali touched on “vaccine nationalism” and the lack of equity and solidarity nations showed one another during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Youth are the
engine of innovation”, he said as he cited a quote, stressing on the ever-relevant need for young people to not only be active public citizens, but leaders that are engaged in influencing policy-making within their communities.

During ACS LEBMUN ‘21, young, innovative thinkers and top delegates in grades 6-12 had the opportunity to tackle the most pressing global crises that grip our world today from foreign interference in Arab nations, to the equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, and governmental implications in press suppression.
This year also marks the beginning of a partnership between ACS LEBMUN and local public schools in Beirut. The goal is to permanently integrate MUN programs into their curriculums, and allow their students to participate as LEBMUN delegates alongside students from all over the world.

MUN is a simulation of the actual United Nations. It is run in the same way the real United Nations general assembly is run in New York with the same officers and committees. The delegates debate relevant and pressing global issues and pass resolutions in an environment open to critical debate, open mindedness, and diplomatic conduct.
Despite the circumstances, LEBMUN has, and will remain, at the forefront of Model UN simulations in the region for this year and many years to come.
