Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region, the second edition of Al Dhafra Book Fair is taking place at Madinat Zayed in Al Dhafra until 29 November, organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi).
This year, the fair is hosting leading local publishing houses with their latest publications from Emirati and regional authors across a range of genres, as well as a diverse Cultural Programme featuring a distinguished group of UAE-based authors and intellectuals. The fair offers daily interactive and educational workshops to promote reading, creativity, STEM skills, and lifelong learning in the Creativity Corner and the Illustrators’ and Art Corner.
The fourth day of the fair saw Emirati writer Issa Al Shamsi lead the seminar ‘Cultural Dimensions of Our Environmental Awareness’, which discussed the link between culture and the environment, and explored the deeply-rooted environmental awareness in Emirati culture.
‘Eco-Friendly Craft’ was presented by artist Themar Halawani, who showed children how to use their art skills in ways that help the environment, teaching them to create artistic projects from old plastic bottles.
As part of the UAE National Day celebrations, the Illustrators’ and Art Corner hosted the workshop ‘Spirit of the Union’ with artist Vern Brown, who demonstrated different colouring techniques to participants and showed them how to mix regular and acrylic paints to design their own UAE flag on canvas.
The Creativity Corner hosted a series of interactive activities, including the workshops for children ‘Lego Robotics’, ‘Picasso Drawings’ and the ‘Lego Challenge’, along with a several live theatre shows.
Al Dhafra Book Fair 2019 is located in the Occasions Hall – Madinat Zayed, Al Dhafra. The fair is open Saturday-Thursday from 9 am to 1 pm, and 6 pm to 10 pm; Fridays, from 5 pm to 10 pm. Entry is free of charge.
