Inaugural DCT Abu Dhabi Gahwa Championships enliven SIAL 2019

With just two days to go before the opening of SIAL Middle East 2019 and the live presentations of the first Gahwa Championships, Gahwa (Arabic coffee) enthusiasts from the  GCC have arrived in Abu Dhabi to prepare for what promises to be a challenging and highly competitive test of their skills.


The inaugural championships have been organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) to celebrate the deep love of Gahwa and its place in the region’s heritage. The competition, which features three categories, will take place alongside the region’s premier F&B and hospitality fair, SIAL Middle East 2019, from Monday to Wednesday (9–11 December) at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

Contenders will compete for prizes of AED 125,000, or AED 40,000 for the runners-up,in two Sane’ Al Gahwa Championships (for Light Roast and Medium/Dark Roast). They will be challenged to create the best brews using pre-roasted and ground beans, while presentation and serving skills, knowledge of the history and traditions of Gahwa, will also be tested.

A further two prizes of AED 25,000 each will be awarded to the winners of the Gahwa Roaster Championship, in both Light and Medium/Dark Roast categories. The contestants will be assessed through blind tastings by the Championships’ specialist panel of judges, who will examine the flavour, body, acidity, sweetness, balance and aftertaste of their beans.

A fifth prize of AED 20,000 will be awarded to the winner of the Gahwa Beverage Concept Championship, which will recognise the creator of the finest and most innovative hot or cold Gahwa-based concept beverage.

Hand-picked for their varied expertise in related trades and disciplines, the Championships’ judges include Abdulla Al Mheiri, Abdulla Al Yammahi, Abdulla bin Kulayb, Fatima Al Meghani, Khaled Alsaadi, Mohammed Al Sharhan, Osamah Al-Awwam, Sara Al-Ali and Timothy Sturk.

The Gahwa Championships are open to visitors of all ages; however, those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone wishing to attend the event should sign up at the SIAL registration desk.
