Minister Jreisati: We are pleased to be Reducing Single-use Plastic Waste in Cooperation with Carrefour
Under the patronage and in the presence of the Minister of environment Mr. Fadi Jraisati, Carrefour which is operated in Lebanon by Majid Al Futtaim, launched a campaign to encourage the use of environmentally friendly bags and reduce the usage of plastic bags. Majid Al Futtaim looks at these initiatives not only as a moral commitment, but as a primary responsibility towards customers, partners and all stakeholders in the community, with the aim of contributing more to environmental conservation and sustainable development standards in the region, and also to continually strive to become one of the world’s most environmentally committed companies.
Jean Abdul Sater, District Manager of Carrefour Lebanon at Majid Al Futtaim Retail said, “The pollution crisis in Lebanon is at a crucial point, and we are pleased to be collaborating with the Ministry of Environment to address this issue as part of our overarching goal to become net positive in carbon and water by 2040. We’re confident that with the support of the Lebanese community, we can generate the awareness required to curb the relevance of single use plastics and move one step closer towards creating a greener Lebanon for all.”
From his side, the Minister of environment Fadi Jresiati said ” Majid Al Futtaim is one of the companies that has invested so much in this country, and created a lot of job opportunities for the Lebanese youth, and Majid Al Futtaim’s environmental strategy is in line with the Ministry of Environment plan” and he added “I am very proud of this initiative and that Carrefour was one of the first to fight plastic, and I am confident that the other supermarkets will join this campaign soon, but at the same time we call on the consumers to be responsible and change their habits toward the environment, as the environmental cost that Lebanon is paying is clear to all, and plastic poses the greatest danger to our environment. Our presence today in Carrefour confirms that the alternative is available”, he added. “I thank Carrefour because the alternative – the environmentally friendly bags – was made in Lebanon and will help encourage our national industry,”
In the end, the two sides declared that cooperation between them will not be restricted to the campaign against plastic, but afforestation campaigns will be coordinated in different areas that were deformed by quarries.
The Minister said, “In partnership with Majid Al-Futtaim, we will be able to change part of the picture that quarries saw”.
It is worth mentioning that the launch of the “Solution is in Our Hands” campaign was attended by number of environmental, cultural and military people.
