The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi presents Abu Dhabi Choral Group’s Quarantania Mania Virtual Concert
The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), in partnership with Abu Dhabi Choral Group (ADCG), invites community members and music lovers to watch the online debut of ADCG’s Quarantania Mania Virtual Concert, a musical revue with classic musical theater and cabaret songs that feature creatively altered COVID-19-related lyrics. The entertaining musical show will be streamed on Friday, June 26 at 8pm (GMT+4) through The Arts Center’s Facebook page.
Despite having to cancel their annual musical Young Frankenstein, that was scheduled to cap The Arts Center’s fifth anniversary season in late June 2020, ADCG will instead offer audiences a virtual concert with a dazzling lineup of songs from musical movies and shows to amuse, entertain, and delight viewers while they observe physical distancing.
From emotional choral numbers to witty solos, and charming duets ADCG will entertain audiences with songs such as I Can Go the Distance from Hercules, now aptly named, I Can Social Distance and Do You Wanna Build a Snowman from Frozen, which has become, Do You Wanna have a Pool Day?
Executive Artistic Director of The Arts Center at NYUAD Bill Bragin said: “ADCG is one of Abu Dhabi’s longest-standing performing arts organizations, and over four decades they have become a beloved anchor of the cultural and social life of the city. When it became clear that we wouldn’t be able to present Young Frankenstein as our planned season closer, in the spirit of ‘the show must go on,’ we invited them to come up with another approach to bring the talent and creativity of our friends and neighbors to the public. ADCG has come up with a playfully charming new approach to keep us all connected.”
ADCG Performer and Board Member, Cathryn Downing said, “Today Abu Dhabi Choral Group (ADCG) is proud to announce their online virtual concert, entitled Quarantania Mania in collaboration with The Arts Centre. With the COVID-19 pandemic canceling all ADCG rehearsals since March and performances in June of their musical Young Frankenstein, the group had to come up with an alternative way to express creativity and bring joy into the homes of their friends, families, and fans. Quarantania Mania features innovative COVID-19 parodies of popular musical numbers to suit the current pandemic climate. All numbers were written by the members themselves and will take you on the emotional journey associated with being in quarantine. You will sometimes laugh, sometimes cry, and ALWAYS identify with all the emotions on display. Hosted by the enigmatic Shera-Lea Saunders (a long time member) and featuring past and present members from over 10 countries, be sure to tune in online.”
ADCG, the longest running amateur music group in the UAE, was established in 1977. The group is comprised of seasoned veterans as well as emerging talents from all over the world. Now completing its 43rd season in 2020, ADCG has staged over 75 shows in its storied history. ADCG performs two shows a year with a musical revue in the fall and a fully staged musical in the spring. Some of their previous shows include Lights, Camera, Sing!, Beauty and the Beast, The Music Man, 20 Shades of Broadway!, Heroes and Villains, and more.
